INEC Targets 103 Million Voters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its objective to engage 103 million voters in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, while simultaneously intensifying measures to boost operational readiness and safeguard public trust in the voting process.

The commission is also intensifying preparations to ensure strict compliance with electoral laws, operational procedures and its code of conduct as the polls approach.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a readiness assessment visit to Enugu State on Tuesday, October 20, alongside national commissioners, resident electoral commissioners from the South-East and other senior officials.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, the commission said the visit was part of ongoing efforts to assess its preparedness for the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan urged INEC officials to remain neutral, professional and committed to the provisions of the Electoral Act, warning against conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

The statement reads in part: “The Hon. Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from across the South-East Zone, and other senior officials of the Commission, continued the readiness assessment visit to Enugu State ahead of the 2027 General Election, engaging with staff and assessing the Commission’s level of preparedness for the polls.”

The INEC chairman said the commission had made progress in recent off-cycle elections but noted that the nationwide polls would require more rigorous planning, stronger coordination and strict adherence to established procedures.

He disclosed that the commission had completed nine of the 14 major statutory milestones outlined in its revised timetable and schedule of activities, urging officials to sustain the pace of implementation.

Amupitan also warned staff against political pressure, financial inducements and intimidation, stressing that their decisions must be guided by the law rather than personal interests or political considerations.

On election security, he said INEC would continue collaborating with security agencies to protect election personnel, technological assets, electoral materials and voters, while ensuring that polling units remained accessible despite local security challenges.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, Dr Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, said the assessment visit would help the commission identify operational gaps and develop practical solutions before the elections.

He urged participants to use the exercise for an honest assessment of their readiness and constructive problem-solving, assuring the commission’s leadership of the state’s commitment to working with the national headquarters, other states, security agencies and relevant stakeholders.
