Four Killed As Dilapidated Building Collapses In Ilorin

Four persons have been killed after a dilapidated two storey building collapsed on its occupants in the Popo Giwa area of Ilorin, Kwara State, early Tuesday morning.

The incident, which occurred at about 5:30am, also left one person in critical condition, while three others were rescued with minor injuries.

Eight persons were initially trapped when the structure collapsed in Ilorin West Local Government Area, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.

The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle Hakeem, confirmed that four of those trapped died in the incident.

He said one of the survivors was receiving treatment at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin, in critical condition.

Three other victims were rescued with minor injuries, he added.

Hakeem said the condition of the building contributed to the disaster, describing the structure as dilapidated and structurally weak before it came down.

He explained that the affected property was a complicated two storey structure, with sections of both the lower and upper floors collapsing.

Rescue and recovery operations continued at the scene as emergency personnel worked to clear the rubble and debris.

Personnel from the Kwara State Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the police were involved in the operation.
