Several communities across Osun State have been hit by flooding following days of torrential rainfall that destroyed property and damaged a bridge linking Ijaregbe with Ilesa.
The heavy downpour, recorded between Friday and Monday, affected parts of Osogbo, including Ayekale, Famson Area, Oke Baale, Sasa and Ilesa Garage. Muroko Road in Ilesa was also submerged after the Ora River overflowed, while the Ijaregbe-Ilesa bridge sustained damage following hours of rainfall on Monday.
Other affected areas include Ijana, Ibala, Ayegunle, Idooko and Eesun Ijesa, with the flooding disrupting the movement of residents, goods and services.
In a report by Naija Info, two Ayekale residents, Akin Olugbodi and Shekinat Olaegbe, said they lost property, with Olaegbe stating, “I lost valuables to flooding and many houses were flooded after heavy rain in Osogbo last Friday.”
“The water channel in our area is blocked and a few hours of rain made the water overflow its boundary.”
“We live in fear of another flooding at any moment.
“It has been raining in our area in the last three hours.
“The government will need to act quickly,” she said.
The Olomu of Ijaregbe, Oba Edward Adetimo, said the damaged bridge had cut off the community from Ilesa.
“The collapse of the bridge was caused by the heavy downpour at midnight,” the monarch said.
He added that affected children could not attend school in Ilesa and appealed to the state government for urgent assistance.
Osun Environment Commissioner Mayowa Adejoorin said the government had taken preventive measures, including dredging waterways and public awareness campaigns.
The Federal Government has also listed Osun among states facing critical flood risks between 27th of Sept. 27 and 10th of October.
