A teacher, Aisha Kende Dailla, and her seven children have been rendered homeless after a fire destroyed their three-bedroom apartment in Lokoja, Kogi State capital.
The fire, which occurred few days ago, razed the family’s home at First 200 Units, along Mallam Hassan Road, near Wada Footballers Camp.
The teacher, an indigene of Lokoja LGA, said the fire started shortly after electricity was restored to the area following a three-day blackout.
She said the fire started from the ceiling and was caused by a high-voltage surge when power was restored.
“I lost everything I had worked for over the years within a few minutes. My vital documents, educational certificates and personal effects were consumed by the fire.
“All the belongings of my five children and two others under my care were also burnt to ashes,” she said.
Dailla said the family had been struggling to survive since the incident, with no shelter, food or basic necessities.
She said their small-scale business, which supported the family’s upkeep, had also been grounded after its stock and goods bought on credit were destroyed in the fire.
“My children and I are now homeless, with no food, no clothes and no means of survival,” she said.
Dailla appealed to the Kogi State Government, individuals, corporate organisations, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the family.
“I am calling on Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and stakeholders in all walks of life to, as a matter of urgency, save a family in despair for the sake of humanity and God,” she said.
