The Zamfara State Ministry of Health, working alongside Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has officially kicked off door-to-door active searches to track down suspected cases of diphtheria across the Gusau Local Government Area.
The exercise is aimed at strengthening early detection, preventing further transmission and ensuring that suspected cases are promptly referred for treatment.
Under the initiative, health teams are conducting active case searches in communities while educating residents on the signs and symptoms of diphtheria and the need to seek medical attention promptly.
Suspected cases identified during the exercise are being referred to designated treatment centres, including the Infectious Diseases Centre (IDC), Damba, and Primary Health Care (PHC), Kwata.
According to the state Ministry of Health, patients and caregivers at the designated centres are receiving free healthcare, including food, as well as further assessment and treatment.
The intervention also focuses on strengthening infection prevention and control measures, improving the capacity of health workers and supporting efforts to halt the spread of the disease in communities.
The ministry said attention was also being given to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities at the treatment centres to promote safe infection prevention and control practices.
The Director of Public Health, Dr Yusuf Abubakar Haske, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting public health and containing disease outbreaks.
The ministry and MSF urged residents of Gusau to cooperate with response teams and promptly report suspected diphtheria cases to health authorities for early assessment and appropriate treatment.
