Abducted NYSC Members Regain Freedom in Imo State

All twenty youth corps members who were previously kidnapped while traveling to their respective National Youth Service Corps orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom States have now been released.

The victims, who were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, were attacked near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, on October 1.

The kidnappers had initially demanded a ransom of N1 billion but later reduced their demand to N100 million.

However, on Wednesday, they were rescued from Amakohia-Ubi forest in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

According to security sources, their rescue followed a coordinated operation involving security agencies.

They are currently at the Department of State Services (DSS) Hospital in Owerri, where they are receiving medical attention and undergoing medical checks.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has commended security agencies for securing the release of the 20 corps members.

In a statement he personally signed, Governor Uzodimma also expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts of both the Oyo and Imo State Governments towards the release of the captives.

He said that since the issue involved the security of lives, the government was cautious about releasing too much information to the public, hence the discreet manner in which it was handled.

The governor said he was particularly grateful to the security agencies for the discreet and collaborative manner in which they tackled the challenge.
