Labour Party Youth Leaders Move to Align with APC and Support Tinubu for 2027

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, youth leaders within the Labour Party have put forward a proposal to align themselves with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside various support groups backing President Bola Tinubu.

The proposed realignment would involve collaboration with the Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The development was contained in a statement on Saturday, October 3, by the Edo State Youth Leader of the Labour Party, Comrade Ken Omusi.

According to the statement, the proposal followed a virtual meeting held on October 2 involving the Labour Party National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, members of the National Youth Leadership, National Zonal Youth Leaders and State Youth Leaders.

The participants reportedly deliberated on the party’s political direction amid its prolonged internal crisis and the future of youth participation in national governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

The youth leaders expressed concerns over what they described as “inadequate recognition, total negligence, lack of engagements and no support for the youth constituency” during and after the 2023 elections.

They also criticised the experience of the party’s youth constituency during the 2023 presidential campaign, alleging that they “laboured in vain for a presidential candidate who lacked the skills to consolidate.”

The statement said the participants subsequently discussed the possibility of supporting a political platform that would provide greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment and inclusion in national decision-making.

The youth leaders also reviewed various policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration, including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

Following the deliberations, the participants called on Ahanotu to immediately begin consultations with stakeholders within the APC and the various pro-Tinubu groups on the possibility of political collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The statement said the youth leaders expressed confidence in Ahanotu’s leadership and mandated him to facilitate the proposed discussions.

They, however, stressed the need for “broad-based consultations and consensus-building” among Labour Party youth leaders before any final decision is reached.

The meeting also proposed a physical gathering of Labour Party youth leaders in Abuja to consider the outcome of the consultations and determine the next steps on the proposed political realignment.

The statement described the proposed engagement as part of an ongoing discussion within the Labour Party’s youth constituency on political participation, strategic partnerships and the role of young Nigerians in shaping Nigeria’s political and developmental future.
