The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has said that in its bid to deliver tomorrow’s infrastructure, women engineers must adapt to systems that work for everyone, not just a privileged few.
Engr. Chinyere Nnnenna Igwegbe, the APWEN President, who stated this at the opening of the 2026 International Conference, Exhibition & AGM with the theme “Designing Adaptive Systems : Engineering Energy, Building Net-Zero, Delivering Tomorrow’s Infrastructure”, said women need systems that can bend without breaking.
She said the conference “is our space to figure out how to share our research, argue our points, learn from one another, and celebrate the incredible innovations coming from APWEN members”.
Engr. Chinyere Nnnenna Igwegbe stated that the way “we build our cities, and the way we care for our environment is shifting right before our eyes. As women engineers we are not just watching this change happen, we are the ones rolling up our sleeves and building the solutions”.
She added that “being a woman in engineering is not always an easy path. We face challenges, we break barriers, and we often have to work twice as hard to be heard. We are leading projects, mentoring young girls, and proving every day that we belong at the forefront of this industry”.
In his remarks, President of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, represented by APWEN’s 8th President, Engr. Patricia Odili, said women engineers are central actors in engineering progress and that inclusive economic growth cannot be achieved without engineering excellence by women.
