Plateau: Slain herders buried amid tears

Three herders who were killed around the Aloghom area of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State have been buried in Mangu Town on Sunday morning.

Daily Trust had reported how the deceased, identified as Garzali Shaibu, 18; Bashiru Yakubu, 14; and Salim Abubakar, 15, were killed on Saturday. About 50 cattle were also reportedly shot dead in the incident.

The funeral prayer was conducted on Sunday at the Mangu Central Mosque and led by Imam Jibrin Ahmad Dalhat, Chief Imam of the mosque. Thereafter, the corpses were moved to the Mangu Cemetery, where they were buried.

Speaking during the burial of the deceased, Muhammad Salihu, Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Mangu, called on residents and members of herding communities to remain calm.

“I am calling on all youths to remain calm and not take the law into their hands. You are the leaders of tomorrow. What is happening to us is a test for us as believers. We should calm ourselves down and not panic. It is permitted by Allah that this is their time. They will never live beyond their time,” he said.

“We are calling on the government and security agencies to look into the incessant killing of our members and the destruction of our property. Recently, residents of the area lost cattle worth millions of naira after gunmen attacked the community and we were asked to be patient.

“We were patient and the government did nothing about it. Around that axis alone, our people have experienced over 11 attacks and nothing has been done. We are still calling on the government to do something to make us feel that we are all at home and equal, irrespective of our ethno-religious differences,” he said.
