Former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, has raised concerns over alleged anti-party activities within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, warning that the development could undermine the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections if not urgently addressed.
Akindele alleged that some members of the ruling party are already working with opposition candidates ahead of the elections, describing the trend as dangerous for the APC’s electoral prospects.
“It is no longer news that certain members of the APC in this state have decided to court and work for members of opposing parties seeking election into the various offices being contested for ahead of the January/February 2027 general elections,” she said.
While dismissing suggestions that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was backing such moves, the former Speaker maintained that supporting opposition candidates would be politically damaging to the party.
“While some opine that the Governor is aware and indeed in support of those decisions, methinks it may be disingenuous for anyone to think so. Regardless of what I think of his politics, even he must be aware that to do so will be a suicidal move politically; a political harakiri for him to even contemplate it!” she stated.
Akindele warned that the growing discontent among party members stemmed from unresolved grievances following the APC primary elections, noting that many aggrieved members felt unfairly treated.
She said failure to address the concerns of dissatisfied members could lead to wider divisions across the state.
The former Speaker argued that the current reconciliation committee set up by the state chapter of the APC lacks the neutrality required to mend the rifts within the party.
“You see the reconciliation committee set up by the state party? It is a whole set of candidates from a whole line of leadership that were ‘robbed’; it is now them that are setting up a reconciliation committee?! Who is offended? Who is seeking reconciliation? Who is supposed to appeal to whom?” she queried.
