The European Union has strengthened its engagement with the Nigerian Navy, the Western Naval Command and the newly established Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea (CMTF-GoG), headquartered in Lagos.

The development followed a recent EU technical mission to Lagos focused on deepening cooperation on maritime security and capacity building in the Gulf of Guinea.

The mission provided an opportunity for the EU to demonstrate its ongoing support for regional maritime security initiatives, including the monitoring of Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) training led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) under the €15 million Safe Seas programme.

The EU also highlighted Portuguese Navy training delivered through the €10.37 million Support to West African Integrated Maritime Strategy (SWAIMS) programme.

SWAIMS is providing 24 rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), forensic equipment and specialised training to 12 West African coastal states to strengthen their capacity to combat maritime crime and improve maritime law enforcement.

The EU said the initiatives underscore its commitment to supporting Nigeria and other Gulf of Guinea states in building stronger, better-equipped maritime security institutions and enhancing regional cooperation.

The engagement with the CMTF-GoG also reflects growing efforts to improve coordination among regional maritime security actors in tackling piracy, trafficking and other threats in the Gulf of Guinea.
