Chinese national in police custody over ‘assault’ on employee

A Chinese national, Bai Quang, has been taken into police custody in Lagos over allegations of sexually assaulting and repeatedly making unwanted advances towards his male Nigerian employee.

The suspect was accused of allegedly assaulting the employee, identified as Charles Nwafor, after his repeated advances were reportedly rejected.

A police source disclosed that Quang allegedly pulled down Nwafor’s trousers and touched his private parts, among other alleged acts, despite the complainant’s refusal.

The source said the suspect later allegedly lured Nwafor to a hotel under the guise of a business transaction, where he attempted to force him into unwanted sexual acts.

The alleged attempt was unsuccessful, prompting Nwafor to petition the police.

Following the petition, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, directed that the case be transferred from Ilemba Hausa Police Station, Ojo, to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation.

The source further alleged that Quang threatened Nwafor and terminated his employment after the latter refused to yield to his demands.

The case is being investigated by the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Section of the SCID under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Dayo Akinbisehin.

The source said the Chinese Embassy was being notified of the arrest and detention in line with diplomatic procedures involving foreign nationals.

He added that investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine the appropriate legal action.

“The suspect is in safe custody while investigation is ongoing,” the source said.

The SCID recently decentralised its investigations into specialised units and sections to strengthen its response to emerging crimes across Lagos.

The restructuring also saw the establishment of the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Crimes Section to handle criminal cases involving non-Nigerians and enhance cooperation between the police and foreign diplomatic missions.
