The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said they manually submitted former President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential nomination and the names of their other candidates for the 2027 elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The development is coming despite the recognition of the PDP faction backed by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike by the electoral empire.
The PDP has been polarised into two factions since the conduct of the national convention of the party in Ibadan last year.
A series of litigations culminating in the judgement of the Supreme Court nullifying the convention failed to bring the needed respite to the party.
However, after the Supreme Court judgement, INEC recognised the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership and gave them the access code to upload the names of candidates for the 2027 elections unto their platform.
But addressing a press conference on the development in the party, Ini Ememobong, the national publicity secretary of the Interim National Working Committee under the leadership of Turaki, said their candidates were validly nominated in line with the electoral act.
Ememobong warned the commission against publishing any list other than the one submitted by the committee.
Ememobong said that notwithstanding INEC’s refusal to provide them with the necessary access code: “We have successfully submitted, manually and in full compliance with the Electoral Act 2026, the list of candidates sponsored by the authentic Peoples Democratic Party.
“We are exhausting every constitutional, legal and democratic avenue to ensure that our party is not hijacked or annexed to the ruling party.”
Reacting to the recent judgement of the Federal High Court, which refused to grant the recognition of the Turaki-led leaders, Ememobong said the development was “clearly inconsistent with the extant decisions of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal that form the foundation of our case.”
