2027: Accord Party factional presidential candidate Imumolen withdraws, backs Tinubu
Prof. Christopher Imumolen, the Accord Party’s factional presidential candidate, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Imumolen, who is also the National Chairman of the Accord Party, said his decision followed consultations with the party’s leadership and was driven by the need to prioritise Nigeria’s unity, stability and development over personal political ambition.
In a statement titled “10 Reasons Why I Withdrew from the Presidential Race to Support His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the 2027 Presidential Election,” dated August 2, 2026, Imumolen said his decision was based on his conviction that Tinubu’s administration was pursuing policies that aligned with key aspects of his own manifesto.
He listed economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation and national development as areas where he said both agendas shared common ground.
According to him, supporting Tinubu was a patriotic decision rather than one motivated by personal political considerations.
“Following my emergence as the Accord Party’s presidential candidate during the duly conducted presidential primaries, I, in consultation with the party leadership, made the patriotic decision to withdraw from the presidential race and fully support the re-election of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the 2027 Presidential Election,” he said.
Imumolen said Tinubu had demonstrated resilience and the capacity to navigate Nigeria’s complex political and economic environment.
He described the President’s leadership as courageous and strategic, adding that Tinubu’s political experience had helped to develop leaders across the country.
The Accord chairman also cited Tinubu’s commitment to progressive governance, institutional reforms and policy continuity as reasons for backing his re-election.
He said continuity was necessary to sustain reforms and provide the stability required for long-term economic growth.
Imumolen further praised Tinubu’s ability to identify and empower capable individuals, build political consensus and make difficult decisions.
He said the President could serve as a bridge between Nigeria’s older generation of democratic leaders and a new generation of leaders focused on transformation.

On the economy, Imumolen acknowledged the hardship faced by Nigerians but expressed confidence in the direction of the administration’s policies.
“Despite current economic challenges, I remain convinced that his determination, policy direction, fiscal discipline, and decisive leadership will reposition Nigeria’s economy for sustainable prosperity,” he said.
He also praised Tinubu’s willingness to work with Nigerians across political divides, arguing that such collaboration demonstrated statesmanship and a commitment to national development beyond partisan considerations.
The Accord leader said his decision was informed by the belief that public service should be driven by a desire to serve rather than merely to occupy political office.
“My aspiration has always been to serve Nigeria and not merely to occupy public office. Whenever the national interest is better served through unity and strategic collaboration, I will always choose Nigeria above personal political ambition,” he said.
Imumolen said continuity, policy consistency and political stability were particularly important at this stage of Nigeria’s development.
According to him, these factors are critical to attracting investment, creating employment, strengthening institutions and building a prosperous country for future generations.
He subsequently declared his “total support” for Tinubu’s re-election and urged members of the Accord Party, his supporters, youths, professionals and other Nigerians to support what he described as a “national project.”
Imumolen said his withdrawal from the presidential contest was a deliberate sacrifice made in the country’s interest.
“History will always remember those who placed national progress above personal ambition,” he said.
The development comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which President Tinubu is expected to seek a second term.
