Tinubu Transforms Nigeria Immigration Into African Border Security Leader

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has credited President Bola Tinubu with transforming the Nigeria Immigration Service into a continental leader in border security, driven by strategic investments in cutting-edge technology and vital infrastructure.

Tunji-Ojo stated this in a post on X, highlighting the service’s development of a fully off-grid, solar-powered Command and Control Centre and a data centre with a capacity of more than eight petabytes, which he described as one of the largest in Africa.

“His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has positioned the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), as a continental leader in border security,” the minister said.

He said the facilities reflect the technological capacity being developed within the service to support its border security operations.

“From a fully off-grid solar-powered Command & Control Centre to an 8+ petabyte data centre, one of the largest in Africa, NIS now runs resilient technology managed entirely by its own officers,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

The minister’s remarks highlighted the role of technology in strengthening the service’s operational capacity, particularly through infrastructure designed to support its command, control and data management functions.

The solar-powered Command and Control Centre is designed to operate independently of the conventional electricity supply, while the data centre provides substantial capacity for storing and managing information.

Tunji-Ojo’s statement also emphasised that the systems are managed entirely by NIS officers, pointing to the service’s in-house technical capacity.

What You Should Know

The federal government has equipped the Nigeria Immigration Service with advanced technological infrastructure, including a massive data center and an independent solar-powered command center.

  • Positive Impact: These upgrades enhance national security, improve response times at borders, and ensure that critical immigration data is managed securely and efficiently by local officers.
  • Potential Concerns: The long-term success of these high-tech facilities depends heavily on consistent maintenance and continuous technical training to prevent system vulnerabilities.
