Segun Showunmi has pushed back against claims that his wife, Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi, secured a new position at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a favor following his appointment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 presidential campaign council.
Reports indicate that Isah Magaji Gummi, who previously headed the Electoral Operations Department, was redeployed to the Voter Registry Department, while Adeyemi-Showunmi was moved from Lagos, where she served in the administration department, to head Electoral Operations.
Adeyemi-Showunmi is married to Segun Showunmi, a political commentator who served as a spokesperson for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 presidential campaign.
Speaking on Channels Television, Showunmi was asked whether his political involvement influenced INEC’s reported redeployment of his wife.
He rejected the suggestion, saying, “Don’t you dare say that about me. Reward who? Reward who?”
Defending his wife’s professional record, Showunmi described her as a career civil servant who had spent her working life at INEC.
“That’s a civil servant. She’s a Level 17 officer and has worked in INEC all of her life,” he said.
He also cited her previous role as Lagos State Administrative Secretary, questioning suggestions that her redeployment was linked to his political affiliation.
“She was Lagos State admin secretary — didn’t Peter Obi win there in 2023?” he asked.
The redeployment has generated public debate over transparency, political neutrality and the need to maintain confidence in INEC ahead of the 2027 general election.
