Jigawa State Issues Strict Warning to Livestock Traders Over Animal Cruelty

The Jigawa State Government has issued a stern warning to livestock traders, transporters, and poultry sellers, cautioning them against the mistreatment of animals and noting that violators will face fines and potential prosecution.

The warning comes as the state marks Global Animal Welfare Week, with a campaign to promote proper feeding, hygiene, safe transportation and humane handling of animals.

The Director of Livestock Extension at the Jigawa State Ministry of Livestock Development, Mudansir Habib, gave the warning during a sensitisation visit to Shuwarin Weekly Market, where officials engaged traders and others involved in the livestock business.

Habib says the campaign will extend to livestock markets across the state, urging transporters moving animals from northern Nigeria to the south to ensure their safety and avoid unnecessary suffering.

He also cautions poultry sellers against carrying birds upside down or handling them carelessly, stressing that animals deserve proper care.

The ministry says it will take stricter action against those who ignore the guidelines, including fines and prosecution where necessary.

The Chairman of the West African Rearers Association, Mustafa Andaza, welcomes the initiative, saying it will help traders understand the importance of animal welfare and discourage harmful handling practices.

Some livestock dealers at Shuwarin Market also welcome the campaign and pledge to follow the guidelines.

With the theme, “Healthy Animals, Productive Livestock for a Prosperous Jigawa State,” the campaign highlights the link between animal welfare, livestock productivity and the livelihoods of traders, farmers and other Nigerians who depend on the sector.

The state government says sustained public awareness and compliance with animal welfare standards are essential to protecting livestock, improving productivity and supporting the livestock value chain.
